Chinese Hacker Extradited to Korea in Major Cybercrime Bust Targeting BTS Jungkook

South Korea’s fight against transnational cybercrime, authorities have brought the alleged mastermind of a sophisticated hacking operation back to face justice on home soil.

The 40-year-old Chinese suspect arrived in Seoul on Wednesday after being extradited from Thailand, the Ministry of Justice confirmed. He stands accused of orchestrating a criminal network that siphoned off more than 38 billion won (roughly $25.4 million) from South Korean victims by stealing personal data and raiding their financial accounts.

According to investigators, the ring operated out of Thailand from August 2023 to April 2025.
Members allegedly breached websites of budget mobile carriers and other platforms to harvest sensitive personal information. Armed with these details, the hackers then targeted bank accounts and cryptocurrency wallets, executing large unauthorized withdrawals.

The list of victims reads like a who’s who of Korean society and entertainment: it includes the chairman of a prominent conglomerate, the CEO of a venture firm, and globally renowned BTS member Jungkook. The sheer scale and boldness of the operation have raised fresh concerns about the vulnerability of personal data in an increasingly digital economy.

Ministry officials described a meticulous, months-long international effort. In May 2025, they secured a provisional arrest warrant through treaty channels. By August, a formal extradition request was filed. Prosecutors and investigators traveled to Thailand last July to coordinate directly with local authorities and maintained regular video conferences to keep momentum alive. A joint operation with Interpol also led to the earlier extradition of a 30-something Chinese accomplice, who was arrested, indicted in September 2025, and is now on trial.

This case shows how determined cooperation across borders can dismantle even well-organized cyber rings,” a ministry official noted. Authorities say they will continue working with police and diplomatic partners to pursue other members and strengthen defenses against online fraud and hacking that prey on ordinary citizens and high-profile figures alike.

The extradition marks another step in Seoul’s push to hold accountable those behind the rising tide of digital theft. As South Korea’s K-pop and tech sectors continue to shine globally, such cases underscore the need for robust cybersecurity not just at home, but in partnership with international allies.
