Drake’s BTS lyric in Iceman ignites global fan reaction

Canadian rapper Drake has sparked a wave of online discussion after mentioning BTS on his newly released album Iceman, with fans split over whether the lyric is a compliment, a flex, or both. The reference has drawn strong reactions from Korean and international listeners alike, turning a single line into a wider conversation about crossover influence in global music.

Drake unexpectedly released three full-length albums on Friday, May 15 ET: Iceman, Habibti, and Maid of Honour. The BTS reference appears on the opening track of Iceman, “Make Them Cry,” where Drake says, “I’m feeling like BTS ’cause it took the whole career for me to be so discovered”. The line quickly spread across fan communities after listeners interpreted it as a direct nod to BTS’s international rise.

Reactions online have been mixed but intense. Some fans read the lyric as respectful recognition of BTS’s global reach, while others questioned whether it carried a subtle jab. Korean netizens, however, largely responded with excitement, calling the mention unusual and significant for a Korean act in mainstream American hip-hop. Several comments also framed the reference as proof of how far BTS has traveled in the global music market.

The moment also revived memories of BTS and Drake crossing paths backstage at the 2019 Billboard Music Awards, where BTS won Top Duo/Group for the first time. That prior connection adds another layer to the reaction, especially as fans speculate whether the lyric signals mutual respect or simply cultural name-checking.

The episode shows how quickly a short lyric can become a cross-border pop culture talking point in today’s streaming era.
