Gwangju Stabbing Tragedy: 24-Year-Old Suspect Arrested After Fatal Attack on Teen Girl and Brave Rescuer

A heartbreaking and senseless act of violence has rocked the Gwangsan-gu district of Gwangju, leaving a 17-year-old high school girl dead and her community in mourning.

The incident unfolded around 12:11 a.m. on May 5  Korea’s Children’s Day on a pedestrian path near Nambu University. According to police reports, the victim was walking home alone when 24-year-old suspect Jang approached her and stabbed her multiple times without warning. A male high school student, also 17, heard her screams and rushed to help, only to be attacked himself. He sustained non-life-threatening injuries and remains in stable condition. The young girl was rushed to a nearby hospital but sadly succumbed to her wounds.

Jang fled the scene, first in his private vehicle and then switching to a taxi in an apparent attempt to evade capture. He was arrested approximately 11 hours later near his residence in the Wolgye-dong area. During initial questioning at the Gwangju Gwangsan Police Station, the suspect reportedly told investigators he had no prior relationship with the victim and chose her at random. He claimed the attack stemmed from long-standing suicidal thoughts and a general sense of despair, stating he “found no joy in life.” Authorities believe he had been waiting in his parked car before spotting the girl.

The case has sparked widespread shock and renewed conversations about public safety, especially for young women out late at night, and the urgent need for better mental health resources. While random violent crimes remain uncommon in South Korea, incidents like this often prompt calls for enhanced CCTV coverage, improved street lighting in residential areas, and stronger support systems for those struggling with suicidal ideation.

Police are continuing their investigation, including a review of Jang’s phone records and possible criminal profiling, as they prepare to seek a formal arrest warrant. The community has expressed deep sorrow for the victim, whose life was cut short in such a tragic, preventable way, while praising the young boy who bravely intervened.

As details continue to emerge, this tragedy serves as a painful reminder of the importance of vigilance and compassion in our daily lives. Resources for those experiencing mental health crises are available through the Ministry of Health and Welfare’s 24-hour helpline at 109.
