RIIZE's Eunseok Issues Apology After Racial Controversy

RIIZE member Eunseok has publicly apologized after sparking backlash for using a racially insensitive expression in a fan update shared on Children's Day.

On May 5, Eunseok posted childhood photos via the fan platform Bubble, referring to himself with the Korean term "깜둥이 Eunseok" — a phrase historically used to describe dark-skinned or tanned children but widely criticized today as carrying derogatory racial connotations, particularly toward Black people.

He quickly deleted the post upon realizing the error, yet screenshots circulated rapidly among international fans, igniting heated discussions online about cultural sensitivity in K-pop.

In a detailed follow-up message posted early on May 6, Eunseok directly addressed the incident. "I used an inappropriate expression while sharing a childhood photo," he wrote. "I am sorry to those who felt uncomfortable due to the inappropriate word choice. Although I immediately deleted it after recognizing the mistake, I feel heavy-hearted." He added a commitment to greater care in the future: "I will think and act more carefully. I sincerely apologize."

The controversy highlights ongoing challenges for K-pop idols navigating global audiences. Terms once common in everyday Korean language can carry unintended harm when viewed through an international lens, prompting calls for better education and awareness within the industry.

Despite the setback, RIIZE is preparing for a busy period. The SM Entertainment group is scheduled to release a new mini album on June 15, marking their comeback. Fans remain hopeful the incident will serve as a learning moment, with many expressing support for Eunseok's swift accountability while urging continued growth on cultural matters.

This isn't the first time K-pop stars have faced scrutiny over language choices, reflecting the industry's rapid globalization. Observers note that proactive apologies like Eunseok's can help rebuild trust, though long-term impact will depend on consistent sensitivity moving forward.
