“I Don’t Know Who the Other People Are”: Cannes Reporter’s Dismissive Jab at Korean Stars Sparks Backlash

The international premiere of Na Hong-jin’s sci-fi thriller Hope at the 79th Cannes Film Festival was overshadowed by an uncomfortable press conference moment that has since gone viral.

During the May 18 session, one reporter bypassed the film’s acclaimed Korean cast and addressed only Hollywood stars Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander with the blunt remark: “Hello, Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander. I don’t know who the other people are.” The comment, captured on video, left moderator and attendees visibly stunned, while cast members Jung Ho-yeon and Taylor Russell shared awkward glances.

The reporter then questioned whether Fassbender and Vikander a real-life couple  were cast together as a “package deal” for budget reasons. Director Na Hong-jin quickly pushed back, stating firmly, “No, we worked hard to cast each actor individually. It definitely wasn’t like that.”

The incident has triggered widespread criticism online, with many accusing the reporter of cultural insensitivity and diminishing the achievements of top Korean actors like Hwang Jung-min, Jo In-sung, and Squid Game breakout Jung Ho-yeon. Supporters argue the moment reflects lingering biases against non-Hollywood talent at major festivals, even as Korean cinema continues its global rise.

Despite the controversy, early reviews for Hope remain strong. Industry outlets have praised the film’s intense action, immersive world-building, and visceral storytelling, positioning it as a serious Palme d’Or contender.

The awkward exchange has reignited conversations about respect and visibility for Asian actors on the world stage. As Hope continues its festival journey, this viral moment may ultimately draw more attention to the ambitious project and its diverse ensemble.
