Jang Hyun-seung Issues Apology After Controversial Slang Term Sparks Fan Backlash

Former BEAST member Jang Hyun-seung has publicly apologized following a controversy that erupted during a paid fan communication session on May 21. The incident, which quickly drew criticism online, centered on his use of the term “angimotti,” a slang expression with ties to Ilbe, a notorious far-right online community in South Korea often criticized for its offensive content and history of mocking the deceased.

According to reports, the exchange began innocently enough as Jang discussed popular youth slang like “yar” with fans. However, when he dropped “angimotti,” some followers immediately flagged the term’s problematic associations. Instead of addressing the concern promptly, Jang’s initial reaction fueled further outrage. He reportedly responded along the lines of “Even if I get criticized, I won’t delete it,” and later added, “How would I know that? I’ll delete it, but if you’re uncomfortable, just leave. Don’t overinterpret it.

The defensive tone did not sit well with many fans, who viewed it as dismissive of legitimate sensitivities around harmful online subcultures. Criticism spread rapidly, prompting the singer to reflect and issue a formal apology on May 22 via the same fan platform.

In his statement, Jang acknowledged his misstep with notable candor. “I’m sorry for causing discomfort and disappointment due to an expression that came from my carelessness and lack of awareness,” he wrote. He admitted not fully understanding the term’s deeper connotations or how it might be received, regardless of his original intent. Jang also addressed his poor handling of the feedback: “I took the concerns about the remark too lightly... instead of fully acknowledging my mistake, I tried to explain my position and insisted on it. I am reflecting a lot.

He concluded by emphasizing a commitment to greater responsibility moving forward. “Through this incident, I deeply realized once again how much responsibility my words and attitude carry. From now on, I will be more careful and responsible in all communication.”

The episode highlights the challenges celebrities face in real-time fan interactions, where casual language can quickly collide with broader cultural and historical sensitivities. As of now, reactions remain mixed some fans have accepted the apology as sincere, while others continue to debate the broader implications of platform accountability.

Jang Hyun-seung, who has maintained a relatively low-profile career since his BEAST days, now finds himself navigating the delicate balance between authenticity and public responsibility in the digital age.
