K-pop rookie duo Flare U made its official debut on Wednesday with the release of its first EP, “Youth Error.” The two-member group comprising Chuei Liyu and Kang Woojin unveiled the project during a lively media showcase at Blue Square Woori Won Banking Hall in Seoul’s Yongsan-gu district, where they performed their lead single “Way 2 U” to an enthusiastic crowd.
The duo’s concept centers on the beauty of youthful mistakes and personal growth. Flare U’s name symbolizes two distinct lights merging into one brighter glow, with the “U” also nodding to their fans, who complete the synergy. “Youth Error” tells the story of two imperfect young people navigating stumbles, trials, and eventual unity through companionship. Kang Woojin described the album as “a record of two different youths coming together as one team and becoming one light.”
Both members gained initial recognition through the survival program “Boys II Planet,” where their strong vocals and performance skills stood out, even though neither secured a spot in the final lineup for Alpha Drive One. Far from a setback, the experience proved transformative. “It was physically and mentally challenging, but it really helped me grow,” Woojin shared. Liyu echoed the sentiment, calling it “a really beautiful and unforgettable memory” that sharpened his stage presence and self-expression.
The lead track “Way 2 U” blends bouncy pluck riffs, bright rhythms, glitchy hyperpop textures, and Plugg & B grooves into an infectious hybrid pop sound. It captures the exhilarating rush of realizing feelings that go beyond friendship and boldly pursuing them. Liyu noted the song’s refreshing, cute vibe, adding that its lyrics could easily extend to their supporters.
As one of the few new K-pop duos in recent years, Flare U views its smaller size as an advantage. “Each member gets to show more of their own vibe and individuality,” Liyu explained. Rather than chasing flawless images, the pair aims to highlight sincerity and realness. “Nobody is perfect, but that’s what makes people more beautiful,” Woojin said. Their goal? To become a “vitamin vending machine” for fans reliable sources of energy, comfort, and warmth, much like their role models AKMU.
With “Youth Error,” Flare U isn’t just debuting; it’s inviting listeners into an authentic journey of growth. In an industry that often demands perfection, their message of turning flaws into light feels timely and genuinely human. Early buzz suggests this duo could carve out a meaningful space for relatable storytelling in K-pop. Fans can look forward to more as these “imperfect youths” continue shining together.
